We built this because we needed better EDD renewal tracking
PixelYourSite runs on Easy Digital Downloads.
We sell yearly licenses. We have renewals. We have auto-renewals (subscriptions). We care about first purchases, but we also care about what happens after the first payment.
In all these cases, the customer journey does not stop at Purchase.
If everything is tracked only as a Purchase event, you still see revenue. That is useful.
But you don’t see the full story.
You don’t know if the money came from a new customer, a renewal, a new subscription, or a returning customer. You don’t have the right signals for follow-up campaigns, exclusions, GA4 reports, or Meta optimization.
That’s why we added dedicated EDD lifecycle events to PixelYourSite Pro.
PixelYourSite already tracked EDD purchases and renewal revenue as Purchase events. Now it can also track free trials, subscriptions, renewals, cancellations, and expirations as separate events.
These events are useful for stores using Easy Digital Downloads with the Recurring Payments extension. If you also use EDD Software Licensing, PixelYourSite Pro can track license lifecycle events too.
Dedicated events for EDD subscriptions and renewals
PixelYourSite Professional now has dedicated events for stores using Easy Digital Downloads with the Recurring Payments extension:
StartTrialSubscribeSubscriptionRenewalSubscriptionCanceledSubscriptionExpired
These are not normal page-view events.
A renewal can happen automatically. A subscription can expire in the background. A cancellation does not always happen after a checkout.
That is why these events are sent through server/API integrations when configured, like Meta Conversion API or Google Measurement Protocol.
How to enable EDD subscription events

Go to PixelYourSite Professional → Easy Digital Downloads.
Find the Track Subscriptions option and enable it.
After you enable it, expand the option to see the supported destinations. Select the platforms where you want to send these events.
Before relying on the events, make sure the selected destination has its API connection configured.
For example:
- Meta should use Meta Conversion API, not only browser Pixel tracking.
- Google Analytics should use Google Measurement Protocol, not only browser tracking.
- Other supported tags should also have their server/API option configured when available.
You can check and configure these API options from the main PixelYourSite plugin page, inside the settings for each tag.
This matters because subscription events often happen without a normal page visit. API tracking is what makes these events useful.
StartTrial
Triggered when someone starts a free trial.
This is a strong intent signal. The user did not pay yet, but they moved beyond browsing and showed real interest.
How to use it
Create an audience of users who triggered StartTrial.
Then exclude users who later triggered:
SubscribePurchase
Now you have a clean audience of trial users who did not become paying customers yet.
You can target them with ads that explain the value of the paid subscription.
Example messages:
- “Still in your trial? Here’s what you unlock with the full plan.”
- “Get the most from your subscription before the trial ends.”
- “See why users keep using this after the trial.”
This is useful for Meta remarketing and for GA4 audiences that you can use in Google Ads.
Subscribe
Triggered when a new subscription starts.
This is not the same as Purchase.
Purchase tells you that money came in. Subscribe tells you that a recurring customer relationship started.
For subscription stores, this is often a better signal than the first payment alone.
A first payment can be small, discounted, delayed, or even zero if the customer starts with a trial. The real value can come later through renewals.
Expected LTV for Meta
When possible, PixelYourSite calculates and sends the expected lifetime value with the Subscribe event.
This gives Meta a better value signal.
Instead of seeing only the first payment amount, Meta can receive an estimate of what that subscriber can be worth over time.
This can help Meta better understand which subscribers are more valuable, especially when you use value-based optimization or when you compare campaign quality.
The realistic way to think about it:
Purchase shows the first transaction. Subscribe with expected LTV can show the potential value of the customer.
It does not magically fix campaigns by itself. You still need enough event volume, correct API setup, and a good campaign structure.
But for EDD subscription stores, it is a much better signal than treating every new subscription like a one-time purchase.
How to use it
Use Subscribe to:
- track new recurring customers
- create an audience of active subscribers
- exclude subscribers from acquisition campaigns
- analyze which campaigns bring subscribers, not just one-time buyers
- send Meta a better value signal when expected LTV is available
- build GA4 reports around subscription starts
SubscriptionRenewal
Triggered when an existing subscription renews.
This is retained revenue.
Until now, renewal revenue could be tracked as Purchase. That was useful because revenue was still visible.
But SubscriptionRenewal adds important context.
It tells you that the money came from an existing customer who stayed, not from a new customer.
How to use it
Use SubscriptionRenewal to:
- separate new sales from retained revenue in reports
- understand which campaigns bring customers who renew
- build retained-customer audiences
- exclude renewed customers from renewal reminder ads
- compare first purchase campaigns with long-term customer quality
Example:
If you run ads reminding users to renew, exclude anyone who already triggered SubscriptionRenewal.
That avoids wasting money on customers who already completed the action.
SubscriptionCanceled
Triggered when a subscription is canceled.
This is not a conversion you optimize for.
But it is a very useful audience and reporting signal.
A canceled subscriber already knows your product. They were interested enough to become a customer. That makes them different from a cold visitor.
How to use it
Create a comeback audience from users who triggered SubscriptionCanceled.
Then exclude users who later triggered:
SubscribePurchaseSubscriptionRenewal
This helps avoid showing comeback ads to users who already returned or bought something else.
Example messages:
- “See what changed since you canceled.”
- “Come back when you’re ready.”
- “Restart your subscription with a special offer.”
- “New features are available since you left.”
This event is useful for Meta Custom Audiences and GA4 audiences used in Google Ads.
SubscriptionExpired
Triggered when a subscription expires.
This is usually a reactivation signal.
The customer had access before, but they are no longer active.
How to use it
Create an audience of users who triggered SubscriptionExpired.
Then exclude users who later triggered:
SubscriptionRenewalSubscribePurchase
Use this audience for reactivation ads.
Example messages:
- “Your subscription expired. Reactivate to continue.”
- “Come back and keep access.”
- “Renew now and continue where you left off.”
- “Your account is waiting if you want to return.”
Use these events in GA4
In GA4, mark the positive subscription events as key events:
StartTrialSubscribeSubscriptionRenewal
Keep SubscriptionCanceled and SubscriptionExpired for reports, audiences, and reactivation analysis. They are useful, but they are not positive conversions.
Recommended custom dimensions:
subscription_name— to see which plan/product triggered the eventpayment_method— if you want to compare Stripe, PayPal, etc.currency— if you sell in multiple currencies
Recommended custom metrics:
predicted_ltvsubscription_valuenumber_of_transactions
The most useful setup is:
- mark
Subscribeas a key event - use
predicted_ltvas a custom metric - use
subscription_nameas a custom dimension - report subscriptions and expected value by source, medium, campaign, and landing page
You can also build GA4 audiences like:
StartTrialbut noSubscribeSubscriptionCanceledbut no recentPurchaseSubscriptionExpiredbut noSubscriptionRenewal
Use these audiences for Google Ads remarketing when GA4 is linked to Google Ads.
Keep Purchase as your main revenue event
Do not replace Purchase with these new subscription events.
Purchase still matters. It tracks revenue.
The new events add context around the subscription lifecycle.
Use them for:
- audiences
- exclusions
- GA4 reports
- comeback campaigns
- Meta subscription signals
- renewal and churn analysis
A good setup uses both:
Purchase for revenue. Subscription events for lifecycle context.
How to enable EDD subscription events
These features are available starting with PixelYourSite Professional 12.5.0.
To use them, first update PixelYourSite Professional to the latest version.
Then go to:
PixelYourSite Professional → Easy Digital Downloads
Enable Subscription Tracking.
After you enable it, expand the option to see the supported destinations and select where you want to send these events.
Before relying on the events, make sure the selected destination has its server-side connection configured:
- for Meta, configure Meta Conversion API
- for GA4, configure Google Measurement Protocol
- for other supported tags, configure the available API/server-side option when available
