GDPR Rule

GDPR Rule

The GDPR Rule is the default rule used for visitors in the European Union. It’s designed for strict opt-in compliance: no non-essential tracking runs until the visitor makes an explicit choice.

It uses Ask before tracking consent.

Where to find it:
Go to ConsentMagic → Rules → GDPR Rule → Edit.

Core settings

Enable Rule

Turns this rule ON/OFF. If disabled, EU visitors will be handled by another rule (if available) or no consent behavior will apply.

Locations

This is the geolocation targeting for the rule. The GDPR Rule is typically set to EU/EEA countries.
Use the dropdown to review or adjust the list.

Show this rule when we can’t retrieve the IP

Fallback behavior when ConsentMagic can’t detect the visitor’s location.
When enabled, this GDPR rule will be shown even if the IP lookup fails (safer for compliance).

Consent type

Set to Ask before tracking (the strict model).
That means: block non-essential scripts/cookies by default, until the user accepts (or explicitly enables categories).

Platform-specific consent behavior (instead of hard blocking)

These options change how ConsentMagic handles certain tags. Instead of blocking the scripts entirely, it can use platform-specific privacy modes.

Meta: use Limited Data Use (LDU)

If enabled, Meta events aren’t blocked — they run under LDU rules.
Works only when Meta Pixel/API events are configured through PixelYourSite (as noted in the UI).

Google Tags: use Google Consent Mode (recommended for Google)

If enabled, ConsentMagic uses Google Consent Mode instead of blocking Google scripts.
This helps keep tags functional in a consent-aware way (and can support modeled conversions).

Microsoft UET: use Consent Mode

Same idea for Microsoft UET tags (requires the Bing add-on as mentioned).

Reddit: use Limited Data Use (LDU)

Applies Reddit’s LDU approach (requires the PixelYourSite Reddit add-on as mentioned).

Sticky controls (persistent access to consent)

Sticky

Shows a small sticky consent bar/button after consent is expressed, so users can reopen and change preferences later.

Smart Sticky / Smart Mobile Sticky

Only show the sticky control when the visitor has negative consent for selected categories (so it doesn’t clutter the UI for “accept all” users).
You can choose which categories trigger it (Analytics, Embedded Videos, Google Fonts, Marketing).

Mobile side sticky button

Places a sticky button on the right side on mobile, to avoid overlapping content.

Buttons and user flow

Deny all button

Adds a “Deny all” option (quick negative consent).

Hide close button

Removes the “X” close button so the user must choose Accept / Deny / Customize (stronger GDPR-style interaction).

Don’t show the consent prompt after click on the close button

If the close button is enabled, this controls what “closing” means.
When enabled, closing is treated like negative consent and the banner won’t keep reappearing.

Add custom button

Adds an extra button (default text: “Minimum recommended”, editable in global text settings or per rule).
You can choose which categories that button enables.

Privacy link

Shows a Privacy Policy link in the consent UI.

Page behavior options

Block scroll

Prevents scrolling until the visitor interacts with the consent message (forces a decision).

Close on scroll

Closes the banner when the visitor scrolls (usually used on less strict models; less common for GDPR opt-in).

Refresh page after consent

Reloads the page after Accept/Deny so scripts/content that depend on consent can load correctly.

Track Analytics cookies and scripts before consent is expressed

Allows Analytics to run before consent (while other categories like Marketing remain blocked).
Use carefully—this can reduce strictness depending on your legal approach.

Consent storage

Excluded from consent storing

If enabled, the user’s choice won’t be stored (the banner will behave like no persistence).
This is rarely desirable for GDPR because it increases repeat prompts.

Content & design (banner layout)

Under Content, you control how the consent UI looks:

  • Design (e.g., Multi-step design)
  • Theme (e.g., Light)
  • Format/size (e.g., Small bar)
  • Position (e.g., Bottom)

Custom text

Lets you override the default copy for this rule (and points you to the Text Section where the message text is managed).
